Precious Life Shelter
PROGRAMS
Emergency Housing Program
When a client first enters the Precious Life program, they start in our Emergency program, during which time they watch informative videos on parenting, pregnancy, relationships, and general health. By the end of the 30 days, the woman will be expected to secure employment or participate in service hours (depending on how far along the woman is in her pregnancy). We also send them to social services to secure benefits and to clinics for health checkups, including STD and TB testing. $2,500 funds three girls for a month in our emergency house, including electricity, housing, laundry, food, transportation, etc.
The outcomes of this program are stabilizing an emergency situation until the woman can secure income, healthcare, and food.
Health and Education Program
Our Health and Education program, led by our Health and Education coordinator, includes classes, videos, and reading materials to instruct the new moms on parenting, pregnancy, labor and delivery, life skills, and relationships. Classes are conducted Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays and are taught primarily by volunteers offering their time and talents.
Women gain confidence in pregnancy and parenting.
Infant Care Center
Since we require our women to be employed full time (or in school), Precious Life Shelter has a day care on-site, in which the child can stay. Our Infant Care Center is licensed for up to 10 children, ages 0-2 years. The childcare is stocked with diapers, wipes, and snacks.
Women are able to go to work and school, knowing that their child is care for, and they can pick up their child when they get home from work/school/appointments.
Case Management
Our case manager meets weekly with each of the residents at the shelter. The case manager is responsible for instructing women in appointments, social services, and securing counselling services when needed. She also connects residents with volunteer mentors, who meet with the woman twice a month. The case manager also helps women work through major decisions in their life by being a listening ear and offering advice.
Women have support system through major life changes.
Employment Resources
Precious Life is a working program. We provide resume workshopping, computers for program and job searching, as well as a dedicated printer so the women can print resumes for bringing to interviews.
Residents secure employment to further career and saving income.
