Tự Lực School for Organizing

The Tự Lực School for Organizing is an 8-week summer program for Vietnamese American youth (ages 14-18) to build leadership skills, learn about activism and community organizing, and connect with Vietnamese culture. Through interactive workshops and discussions, participants explore topics like social justice, civic engagement, and Vietnamese American history. The program also offers cultural activities, including language learning. Upon completing the program, participants may apply for a paid internship in the Fall to gain additional hands-on experience in civic engagement.

Outcomes

Participants plan and execute a community open mic night through twice-weekly sessions, developing skills in outreach, follow-up, event planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Participants deepen their understanding of Vietnamese history beyond 1975, build weekly Vietnamese language skills, and apply at least 20 new vocabulary words relevant to the program.

Participants complete the People’s Tour of Little Saigon and demonstrate an understanding of how immigration and housing struggles shape the community.

Participants engage with community leaders and analyze key strategies for social change, including civic engagement, labor organizing, multiracial solidarity, and intergenerational organizing.

Recruit at least 30 youth applicants through outreach to 1,000 local Little Saigon youth.
