Martial Arts and Leadership Development for Underprivileged Youth
Budo Accelerator provides year-round programs that integrate martial arts training with life and leadership skill development, mentorship, and mental wellness support for underserved youth. Students practice real-world life, leadership, and career skills, mental health tools, and confidence-building through structured martial arts training, then apply those lessons in guided leadership discussions and reflection. Our programs operate year-round on a quarter system at our facility and partner sites. Students are grouped into cohorts of 12-20 in size and meet for two hours weekly for our martial arts-integrated leadership and mentoring programs. Students are also encouraged to practice martial arts and engage with the community up to 6 days/week. Core Components: 1. Martial Arts Training: Students participate in weekly, year-round martial arts classes that include Aikido, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kali, self-defense, and other disciplines. Martial arts serve as a powerful foundation for developing physical coordination, emotional regulation, and mental resilience. 2. Expert-Designed Leadership Curriculum: Designed by experts in education, psychology, and martial arts, our leadership curriculum blends theory and practice to develop real-world skills. The curriculum is accredited by UC Irvine and offers academic credit transferable to UC, CSU, and many other universities. 3. Mental Health Support: We integrate mental wellness into all aspects of our program. Students learn practical tools such as breathwork, body awareness, and trust-based physical interaction — practiced under pressure to build emotional resilience and reduce anxiety. 4. Community & Mentorship: Students join a diverse, intergenerational community across in-person and virtual spaces. They train together at our dojo and partner sites, connect with peers on our Discord server, access online curriculum, and for those 18 and over, engage with professionals through our national mentor portal. 5. Women's Self-Defense Intensives: Our female-led self-defense workshops are tailored for young women ages 14–24, the demographic at highest risk for sexual assault. These intensives focus on prevention, situational awareness, and assertive communication, building confidence and safety in everyday life. We serve 260+ high school and college students annually. Our partnerships with UC Irvine, Simon Scholars, Project Hope Alliance, and the Irvine Public Schools Foundation extend our reach to more youth from underserved and underrepresented communities. UC Irvine alone has over 15,000 first-generation undergraduates.
Our program’s desired outcomes include:
Developing life, career, and leadership skills that support workforce readiness, independence, and self-sufficiency. We aim for 80%+ of our students improving in communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills as assessed through pre- and post-program surveys.
Creating economic mobility and opportunity through development of social capital, mentorship, and career knowledge. We aim for connecting 100% of our college students with mentors and having 90% of students leave our program with good or great career knowledge.
Academic persistence (reducing dropout rates for college students): We aim for a 95% graduation rate.
Improving mental health and resilience, equipping students to face their unique challenges more effectively. Preliminary results of a study run by UCI’s Stress Health and Emotion Lab shows our students experience a decrease in loneliness and depression and an increase in self-efficacy and mastery.
We measure impact across all of our programs. Following is a link to see our outcomes / impact for our program for First-gen / low-income college students at UCI: https://firstgen.naspa.org/blog/uc-irvine-launches-innovative-martial-arts-course-for-incoming-first-gen-students

The Budo Scholar Platform
Budo Accelerator is transitioning from a local, site-based program to a decentralized digital platform. The Budo Scholar Platform delivers our UC Irvine-accredited leadership curriculum to students regardless of their physical location, and pays monthly dues for under-resourced Scholars to train at martial arts academies in their own neighborhoods. Core Components: 1. Digital Curriculum: Fifty modules across five phases — Foundations, Self-Mastery, Perception, Connection, and Leadership. Students complete one module weekly, approximately 20-30 minutes each, consisting of a video lesson, an interactive drill or scenario, application on the mat, and a written reflection. Students advance by demonstrating mastery, earning a badge for each module and a milestone for each phase. The curriculum is accredited by UC Irvine and offers academic credit transferable to UC, CSU, and many other universities. 2. Martial Arts Scholarships: Budo pays monthly dues directly to a Scholar's local martial arts academy. Eligibility is free or reduced-price lunch for high school students and Pell Grant status for college students. Budo administers eligibility, so academies do not assess family income. Scholars train with their own instructors at their own school, and the platform adds the leadership curriculum. 3. Mentorship and Community: Scholars join a national peer community, are matched with professional mentors through our mentor portal, and complete quarterly counselor check-ins. 4. Sustainability Model: A buy-one-give-one structure in which paid memberships for the digital curriculum fund scholarships for under-resourced Scholars. With over 70,000 martial arts schools nationally, this model separates physical training from the leadership curriculum and uses the existing martial arts industry as the delivery network. Our first cohort of approximately 60 UC Irvine students begins in fall 2026, with the first funded Scholar seats placed at partner academies in November. The three-year goal is 700 students across five metro areas.
1. Scholars will demonstrate improved leadership, communication, and stress management skills, measured by pre/post program surveys. Target: 85%+ show measurable gains.
2. Scholars will report improved emotional resilience, self-confidence, and sense of belonging, tracked through Hello Insight pre/post assessments. Target: 90%+ report improvement.
3. 100% of eligible college-age Scholars will be matched with a career-aligned professional mentor.
4. Scholars will complete the UC-accredited leadership coursework and earn academic credit.
5. Scholars will remain in training at their local academy at twelve months, measured by monthly attendance confirmation from partner academies.
